HEBER VALLEY RAILROAD

Number 618 orginally owned by the Union Pacific
A Steam Engine

Don't know if this equipment is still in Use
Used to clear snow from the RR Track

When I was little, a RR track ran side by side with the Katy Highway in Houston
The #816 is much smaller than the engines that pulled freight on the Katy Route.
One day when we were headed into Houston, we saw that the train had jumped the track near Cameron Iron Works where our father Worked. Many cars and the engine were over onto their side and smoke was rising all around them. It was frightening. More than once, I saw a train that had jumped the Track. These cranes come to the sight of a wreck and lift the cars back onto the track.

This train is used today to take tourist on trips into Provo Canyon
In winter it travels only as far as Deer Creek Dam
At Christmas time it runs a Polar Express type Excursion
The Heber Creeper no longer runs between Heber and Bridal Veil Falls

Heber Valley Railroad Depot

Established in 1899 with service between Heber and Provo
It carried freight as well as Passengers
It was owned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad
This service was discontinued in 1967
Now used to ferry Tourist

For the 2002 Olympics it carried the Olympic Flame from Soldier Hollow to Heber and during the games ferried people to Soldier Hollow to see the Cross Country Ski Events

Today it is in trouble financially and just this week asked the Heber City Council to loan them $50,000.

  1. I love trains. These are beauties. I miss trains. Remember when we rode the train from Houston to BYU? We rode the Sam Houston Zephyr from Houston to Dallas, the Texas Zephyr from Dallas to Denver and the California Zephyr from Denver to Provo. Wow! I loved that.
